It is a pre-93 t-bird.

I was reading up about the 4x4 AOD, is it just a different tail-shaft housing? Or is the output shaft within the trans different as well?

Yes the output shaft on 4x4 trans is different and you have to take the whole trans apart to change it. Which if you were going to do that you might as well fix yours.
