Default 91' GT Fog light rewire

SO I have read about the fog light rewire etc... I have a melted fog light plug in the back of the switch. Switch is still good. Is there any reason I can not just run my own new heavier gauge power supply wire (fused) to the switch and back down to the fog lights to completely eliminate going through the factory harness at all?? Pretty much I want wire them separate but just use the factory switch still. IS there any reason I can't?

No reason at all, just use relays like you would for any after market light kit

How and why relays if I run new wire separate to and from the OEM fog light switch?

A relay allows you to use a low power circuit to control a high powered one. You would want to use a relay so your fog lights could be independent of the headlights, and so they could only be turned on if the ignition switch is on or if the engine is running. There are lots of writeups all over on how to do this.
Here is a real basic one. I would get the signal wire (orange) from a source that is only on when the key is on.

I was going to run a new fused line from battery to OEM fog light switch and new line back down to the lights. Then just ground each light and tie the new power wire together.

Youll burn the switch up with out a relay. That switch is not designed to handle the amps that the lights draw.
