Default Jumping rpm when acccelerate

Hi. I was driving on a gravel road and my rpm s started jumping up and down. I stopped car. Made sure all spark plugs and distributor were attached properly. One spark plug wire was actually lose. I reattached. Car idles just fine. When I accelerate the rpms jump up and down and the engine is not having a good time. It Sounds real rough. Any idea what the problem could be? Thank you

Default Jumping rpm when accelerating

Treyj45, Sounds like fuel distribution. Since it was likely a bumpy gravel road, I would guess at a connection at your electrical fuel pump, or maybe a stone flew up and dented your fuel line, causing a mild fuel blockage. Let me know if I am in the ballpark. These are only guesses from past experiences.

Just to be clear, when you say that the RPMs are "jumping up and down", were they still reflecting actual engine speed? Does the gauge read improperly, or is the engine surging? I think it's the latter, based on the engine sounding "rough" but I see that you haven't mentioned any driveability issues like shuddering or stalling.

I never got it up to speed because the engine sounded really bad. Definitely not just gauge malfunction. I'll check the fuel stuff later.
