c5 band adjustment nut

c5 band adjustment nut
Both of my band adjustment nuts are leaking after I touched it on my 84 3.8. One is the popular coarse thread but the other one appears to be a finer thread. Many years ago I thought I saw somewhere someone sold both as a pkg deal. I tried searching ebay and amazon but couldn't find it. Do you know where I can buy both or just the fine thread one? Not sure the thread size or pitch. Thanks

When you adjust the bands, you loosen the nut, then you turn the screw
to 10 ft-lbs, then back off two complete 360 degree turns, then tighten the
nut to 40 ft-lbs. This is the spec for the 5W55S...
5W55S Band Adjustment
The band adjust screw (27) is attached to the band supply strut (26):
Not sure if you can remove the screw to replace it..
I would try a rubber or copper washer or washer under the nut, or put Teflon
tape on the threads of the screw. These options to stop a leak...
I was going to adjust mine, now I am leery...

For C5 here are the instructions.

QUICK CHECKS
The bands can be quick-checked before the road test as follows:
1. Be sure the oil level is correct.
2. Shift the selector to positions R and 2, and check for firm engagement.
* If engagement in R is delayed or mushy, adjust the rear (low-reverse) band.
* If engagement in 2 is delayed or mushy, adjust the front (intermediate) band.
To adjust either band (Figure 68a & Figure 68b):
1. Loosen the adjuster stop.
2. Remove and discard the locknut. Install a new nut loosely on the stop.
3. Tighten the screw to 10 foot pounds torque; or until the adjuster wrench overruns. (All the special adjuster tools click and overrun at 10 foot pounds.)
4. Back the screw off exactly the specified number of turns: intermediate band, 41/4 turns; low-reverse band, 3 turns.
5. Hold the adjustment and tighten the new locknut- 35 to 45 foot pounds.
6. Road test the car. If the complaint isn't corrected, air test the servo.

guys, thanks for the info on adjustment but my question is "where" or "who" can I buy the nuts from. Back in the day some 20 years ago you could get the nuts from Napa. Now the counter person tells me they don't have a listing for the fine thread nut. I've always read to replace the nuts when adjusting because the seal tends to harden and break when you move them.

Op, it looks like you're in luck. The lock nuts are the same between the 5R55S and other Ford tranny's including the C5. You can either go here to this link, the one further down, or the dealer and ask for 5r55s lock nuts. I've used Cobra Transmission before and parts arrive pretty quickly. They ship out next business day via USPS priority so anywhere from 2-4 business days depending on where you're at.

Mustang Dude, I don't think a washer alone will work. If you look at the nuts, they have a rubber type cone that protrudes from the one side. This essentially gets pushed into the area to conform and seal the adjustment bolt like gasket.

Yeah, that has the cone shaped rubber seal, that is pushed into the crevice.
A rubber washer would essentially seal the area, just not go into the crevice.
As long as it squished against the case, and threads. I see it, possibly, not
lasting as long as the nut cone washer, which is a little harder material as well.
I am just saying, I personally, would have tried a washer first... The nuts being
available is great.. They're over $5.00 each on ebay, $$8.00 for a pair, free
shipping though...

I was gonna adjust my bands, but I guess I better order the nuts first. I do have a
slight reverse delay.
