Default CHANGING CAMS

I was wondering how long it would take me to change my cam in my 1990 5.0. And is there any tricks to make the job easier. Thanks

The first time I swapped my cam in my 85 it took about6 hours. But once you get the hang of it, it will probably take around 4. You need to remove your belt, water pump, crank pulley, harmonic balancer ( which takes a special tool ) you intake, and fuel lines for you if youre running fuel injection. You will also have to remove your accessories ( power steering pump, possibly a/c if you have it, and /or alternator to finally remove the timing chain cover. Then you must remove the timing chain and gears. Then there will be a plate that holds the cam in. But you must loosen your rocker arms and pull you pushrods out and pull your lifters out before you pull the cam. Then do it all in reverse to put it back together.

If you have any questions you can email me at yates367@msn.com and i will be more than happy to help

becuase you cant get the timing chain cover off with out removing the harmonic balencer. You might need to remove the radiator and fans , it might make your live a little easier. Just remember to place nots of lube on the cam, lobes and bearing surfaces, before you send it home.

You are better off pulling the motor if not all the way out of the car atleast up enough to clear the front.

Its a pain in the *** to do if youve never done it before but they make a set of tools that allow you to swap in without tearing the top of the motor off.

You have a 90 motor so its a roller block which means your lifters are rollerized and reuseable unlike a flat tappet cam. What the tool is is a magnet that lifts your lifters up enough to allow to slide the cam in. ill give you the link its nothing complicated hell 10 minutes at home depot and i could make the tool im sure.BE SURE TO USE PLENTY OF ENGINE ASSEMBLY LUBE.You shouldnt have much to worry about as far as scarring up your cam lobes considering its a roller block but better safe than sorry.
