Default How do I set the timing

I have a 5 speed man. tran. 1984 Mustang Gt, I just installed a new MSD distributor and even though I marked my spots before removing the old distributor and dropping the new one in the same spot the car won't start. The car backfires like the timing is off. Can anyone tell me how to manually set the timing to get the car to start.

Put piston number 1 on top dead center then point the Dist. rotor to number 1 on the cap.

Like above... get #1cyl to TDC......ask if you don't know how to do this.
Point the rotor to #1 terminal.

That should get you close enough to start it up.

Disconnect the spout connector!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Loosen the dist bolt. Connect the timing gun to the NUMBER 1 sparkplug wire on the dist cap. Point the gun at the harmonic balancer and rotate the cap until its at 14* You might want to sand the harmonic balancer while its moving so that you can see the marks a little better. Dont sand hard obviously. Each mark is 2 degrees so you want to go two marks after the 10* which is what your car is set to.

after you set up the timing gun to all the wires and you loosen the dist a little bit is when you turn the car on.

How can you use a timing light if the car don't start? OK what you can do is have somebody try to start the car so you can turn the dist until the car starts. please check your firing order just to make sure.
