Valvetrain/Head Advice on 86 GT
Hey guys-
I have a stock 86 GT. I recently purchased a set of GT-40 heads off a crate engine for cheap. The heads are brand new and are all ready for stud mount rockers.
I will be putting these heads on my 86 GT along with a Cobra intake, throttle body, intake, shorty headers, x-pipe and continue to run the stock cam. Pistons are stock 86, non-fly cut. I am located in Smog California so I cannot change the cam. What kind of roller rockers should I use? I think the stock ones are 1.6, i'd like 1.7 to give me the slight effect of a larger cam. Will this work good for my application? Anyone have any good brands I should go with?
Best pushrods and lifters should I go with? Does anyone make solid roller lifters, are they popular with the 5.0 crowd?
Thanks
erik

they won't be able to tell if you cam it mildly. not gonna tear it down to look, but make sure you keep the cats and smog pump. to pass the smog test. i almost got a '89 notch to pass w/ no cats and no pump, and long tube headers in fresno on the dyno.
1.7's are good to go though, as long as everything else you list...
all up to you on brands, if money is not an issue, you have a boatload to chose from.
i would have the heads cleaned up a bit, at least the exhaust ports done. maybe a little on the intakes too, but exhaust is the big gain on our cars. valve job not so important , but a nice comp vale job will improbe the flow characteristics. and try to have the intake and heads port matched.
don't deck the heads....you'll be fine w/ stock compression , especially in the heat.

You will not be alright. Its been awhile since we've messed with an engine still equipped with these pistons, but I'm pretty damn sure your gonna have P/V clearance issues. The increase in valve size alone would be enough to worry me but then your adding valve lift using 1.7 rockers too. Id check piston to valve clearance if i were you, before ya just drop the new heads and rockers on and just fire it up.

RE: Valvetrain/Head Advice on 86 GT
I just recent ly installed the 165AFRs with 1.6 rollers and Comp.Cam #XE270HR-14(270/276dur. and .512/.512 lift) with 114 lobe. I 1st called up AFR asked about my concerns on the 86 5.0L with flat top pistons. There Tech. Dept. said NO Problems with the clearance. I installed it and have had NO problems with clearance issues. Hope this helps. Motor sounds great and pulls very strong!!! I'm very happy. Good Luck!!!
