Default Degreeing a Cam

When degreeing a cam the directions with the comp cam's cam indicates using a solid lifter rather than a hydrualic lifter. If the dial indicator plunger will be resting on the outer edge of the hydrualic lifter why would you need a solid lifter? The reason I am asking is because I don't have a solid lifter, but if nessecary I could create one from the old lifters, but it is a flat tappet. Thanks for the feed back.</P>
