what rear end do i have?
hey guys i know ive been asking a lot of questions lately but im trying to figure out as much about mustangs as possible. whats the easiest way to tell what kind of rear end is in one of thes or any ford for that matter. i think the old owner might have done a rear swap with everything else that is done to the car but how do i know for sure.

RE: what rear end do i have?
i'm assuming your asking about gear ratio...not rear end size.
but if you are...you can just look at the bolt pattern to see thats it's an 8.8. very distinct shape on all rear ends.
but for gear ratio..the stock gear ratio is in the door tag drivers side.
"ax" code m=2.73 z=3.08 e=3.27 (aod only)
to see what exactly is in it, you need to raise the rear tires off the ground, chalk the tire , and the driveshaft. w/ the car in neutral....spin the tire 1 complete revolution EXACTLY
count how many times the ds spins for that 1 turn of the wheel.
how many turns will tell you your ratio..... 2 3/4 = 2.73
3 1/2 turns = 3.55
3 3/4 = 3.73
a little over 4 turns is 4.10

RE: what rear end do i have?
no i want to know what rear it has. the car used to have a built 351 and was all race ready. since then it has had a handfull of race parts pulled from it. including the motor the better fuel system the trans, and a couple other things. i was told when i got it it still had 4:10s in it so i figured if it had a rear end in it before it was the same one because it still had the 4:10s. i just dont know how to tell. could it be a 9". if it is an 8.8 is that a good thing? and what came stock in them, was that the 7.5. im pretty sure the 4:10 thing is correct, with the tremec 5 speed it revs like 2200 or so at about 70 i think or something like that.
