Default Won't fire up

Hey guys... This question isnt about a Mustang but rather a 347 so hopefully someone will still be able to help me. I installed a new cam, lifters and pushrods into my car and I'm having some problems getting the thing fired up. The guy i bought the motor from did not install a timing pointer so I'm having to bump it till TDC and point the distributor to the #1 cylinder. While trying to start it up it just cranks and cranks and then will spit gas out of the carb. What does it mean when the gas spits out of the carb? Is the timing too advanced or retarded? Sorry if these questions are a little basic but I've never done this type of thing before. The firing order for the cam is the 351W firing order so I'm sure thats correct, and all the plug wires are in the right places and I've adjusted the valves. So I'm wondering what I'm missing. Here is some of the motor info:

347 w/ 9.5:1 compression
GT-40 Heads..2.02 intake 1.60 exhaust
Cam Specs: hydraulic cam, duration- 295in 305ex, duration at 050in lift- 235in and 245ex, and .525 in lift and .545ex lift.
Edelbrock 650 carb(small i know but getting a new one as soon as more $$$)
MSD 6AL Ignition Box and distributor
MSD blaster 2 Coil

Hopefully someone has some ideas for me. Any help will be appreciated. Sorry to be posting this on a Mustang Forum but I didnt know who else to ask. My Mustang is actually running good for once, its my other Ford that is causing me headaches [:@]

Thanks.

why are you having the 351W cam in a 302 block? Did you set the dizzy to cylinder #1

The cam i put in is for a 302 it just uses the same firing order as the 351W. The firing order i use is 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8 rather then....1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8. When you say dizzy are you refering to the rotor? If so then yes.

The 351W is the same as the 302 HO firing order.

Check the timing. Bring #1 cyl to TDC on the compression stroke. Make a pointer, point it to the balancer and mark the balancer. Stick the distributor in so the rotor is pointing at #1 terminal. That should be close enough to get it to fire. Male sure the plug wire routing on the cap is right, counterclockwise.

Thanks Grimace5.0..i had the wires clockwise. I'm getting ready to head back out into the garage to try it again with the wires in the right direction. I'll keep you posted. Thanks again..you probably saved me many hours of frustration.
