give the alt a spin if you have the belt off.. see if it spins freely. when you start it up, measure the voltage and see it its sitting around 14.5v anything less... or more. and you need a new alt

Go to your local auto shop, Kregans for sure and get it tested and see if its pulling too many amps, Too many amps will cause it to over heat.

what size alt is it and if its a 130 or above did you upgrade the wiring bc its pushing a lot more power through power wire to the solinold which i think is th wire you are talking about and yes it would get hot

Well it could it depends on what was all unhooked and then touching metal I was driving mine while this happened and I ended up spitting (atleast trying to spit) putting out the fire with my hands and shirt after I got the battery disconnected there was a recall on the ford cars for faulty alt. pluggins and that's what happened to me it shorted out got so hot that it caught fire. Had the connector end rewired and alt. rebuilt been awesome ever since.

it is a stock alt can someone probe that wire for me please? it is on the top plug of the alt, it is hot when the car is off and the key is out, i do not think that is right because nothing else is hot in the engine compartment, i think something may be wrong with my ignition switch.

when I did my 3g alternator swap I thought that I had a short somewhere too, my alternator got as hot as my cylinder heads.

but alternators get hot with use, it is normal for this to happen.

now, you say the small white wire on the 3-wire plug is getting hot?do you mean it has 12 volts or it is heating up?
the 2 bigger wires go directly to the battery positive on the solenoid, I have had problems with that stupid rectangle plug burning up and I just got sick of wiring in a new plug, so I just upgraded.

that wire goes to the plug on the voltage regulator, you may have a faulty voltage regulator.
check the volts with the engine running.
