If it's exhaust stroke you shouldn't feel pressure on ur finger, or atleast less then when it's on the compression stroke. Because on exhaust stroke the exhaust valves are open, and the piston coming up pushing the burnt fuel gases through the exhaust valves. In Compression stroke all valves are closed and the piston is coming up to compress the fuel and air, when it gets to the very top of the compression stroke (top dead center) the #1 spark plug sends a spark at that exact moment, pushing the piston back down, when it comes up again it's on the exhaust stroke. Hope that helps.
Anyway It is also totally possible that you are getting it at TDC, but that your distributer is 180 degrees out. You could get the engine to TDC with the distributer in, then take the distributer out and rotate it 180 degrees then put it back in and try starting it.

RE: distributor
clarify, the firing order of SBF's goes with the cam, i.e. if you use a 351 cam (regardless of 289/302/331/347), you get the 13726548 order. If you go with a 302 cam, you get the 15426378. I started with a 302 cam, and recently changed to a 351 cam, along with the new firing order...after first trying to figure out why it was spluttering
is that true??????

RE: distributor
With the coil wire removed from distributor. remove the distributor cap, remove # 1 spark plug, put you left thumb over the spark plug hole, turn motor clock-wise with 15/16 socket and 1/2"breaker bar . When compressed air is felt in cylinder(# 1 compression stroke) stop. Put a screwdriver into hole(to confirm piston is up),then check timing pointer is pointing to 0 degrees TDC on harmonic balancer. If not ,turn motor to align to TDC. Now look at postion of rotor on distributor. Should be at about 2 ' o clock position. If not, pull the distributor up, turn rotor to about 12 'o clock postion, and drop into opening. The distributor will engage the camshaft drive gear and then the oil pump shaft. When this happens, the rotor will turn clock-wise to the 2 ' o clock postion. Next, need to make sure what the correct firing order is for that cam! Do not rely on your memory. Use a shop manual to do the firing order. Once the firing oder has been confirmed, install the plug wires to propper terminals on distributor cap. Reinstall the # 1 spark plug, reattach the coil wire to the distributor. Remember that to advance the timing ,you must turn the distributor clock-wise. Hopes this helps.Good Luck!!

RE: distributor
ok well the whole firing order thing is wrong, your firing order is 13762548, the motor in your car is a 302w it has the same firing order as a 351w, you can not put a cam out of a 289 or early 302 because the firing order is differant, unless you get a chip burnt for the computer or reprogram it. and you can not just chang plug wires on are cars because the computer does not know to change injector timing which is 13762548 so make sure you are using the firing orde above and see what happens.
