Default 347 Stroker power

Hey guys,

I was hoping you guys could tell me how much power a 347 stroker kit would give to a 1991 Mustang Gt 5.0 (V8)

I have minor modes: 1 5/8" headers, 2 1/2" H pipe with dual chamber flowmasters, 3:55 gears, 1.6 ratio svo roller rocker arms, trickflow street intake manifold, cold air intake, 24 pound injectors, 73mm mass air meter, 67mm throttle body, E303 cam, hurst short shifter and a few other things that don't really have much to do with the motor...

I have a Vortech V1 S-trim supercharger that I don't have on the car right now because I really don't want to deal with power adders right now, thats why I'm looking into the 347 stroker.

My questions are: How much power would it give my car with the minor modes it has, how dependable is it as a daily driver, and I do mean that to the fullest extent, I'm actually getting the A/C and Smog system together so I can put it on there and make it street legal because it is my only car, is it harder to maintain a stroked engine? and will I use more gas than I do now?

Thanks guys for your time and help

Benjamin

They actually dynoed a stock 5.0 and then bored and stroked it to a 347 and dynoed it again, the most hp it had over stock was 21 hp and that was with just flowmaster on it.

Just about every 347 I have read about has had 385+HP. That in itself is more then a hundred over stock. You can expect at least 350 at the flyheel. I wouldn't make it an everyday driver though. the 347 is notorius for using oil after some time. If you want to go stroked for a daily driver, I would go with a 331.

I wish I could give more insight on the 331, but I can't. I haven't done enough research on it. I just know the 347 is bad about burning oil.

The 331 has never had oil problems. It has a shorter stroke and the pins don't hang out in the piston rings like the 347 does. That is what causes the problem

I thought about going with a 331, and the more I thought about it the more I figured it wasn't worth it. A stroker kit costs $1000+ which would only of gave me an extra 20-30hp for another 500 bucks I figured I just slap a powerdyne s/c on there and that'll be good for 80-100hp.

Hmmm.. so whats the issue with the oil? if it burns it up, you put more in, yes? Or just how bad is it? and what does it do to driveability and dependability? - Whats the difference between a 331 and a 347 besides size?

I'm not huge on mustangs- I bought mine with all the stuff it already had on it- but I've put about 2000 dollars in repairs on it already and it isn't even that fast. So my idea was to just have it stroked because, as far as my understanding goes, stroking is less stressful on the motor than putting my Vortech V1 S-trim Supercharger on, or am I wrong?

I love muscle cars and this is my first one and even though I've spent more than enough money on it for me to want to throw it awa( or sell it as I have posted before) I like it more and more everyday that it makes me want to fix it til' its as if it were brand new...

Right now I have hundreds of issues, lol. I got oil leaks, cooling problems, bad idle, bad brakes, bad suspension, when I drive the car hard it smells like its burning up( its a really weird rubber burning smell that starts at 2nd gear after 4000 rpm), A/C doesn't work, it doesn't have the smog system, it eats the tires from the inside like crazy cause i got 245 50R 16's, i think my driveshaft is going bad... lol etc etc.... But man when it drives nice My ***** get so big, lol...I feel like I got the biggest stick on the block cause when its driving well the idle is sweet.....

What would be the best way to go then? is there anywhere that I can research 347's? or 331's? or 306's, or whatever... lol whats the best, whats more reliable, what gives better stable consistant power for an every day driver that might go to the track a few times a month....etc etc

The issue with a 347 using oil is the 5.4" rod intersects one of the rings. This problem was solved a long time ago. You can now buy kits that use a 5.315" rod and a taller piston. They still make the 5.4" rod kit. Avoid it and you'll be okay.

If you want to look, I know Probe makes the 5.315" rod 347 kits.
