Default Is my motor stock?

I know it's a hard question to answer but:
Ever since I did some recent tuning to my 88 GT, in first gear at anything near half throttle, I get nothing but smoke and wheel hop--even with hot tires. If any of the GTs that I test drove last year pulled this hard, I would have bought it. My point is, mine feels faster than other pre-Y2K GTs that I've driven (not trying to talk big). Should a stock GT (except for flowmasters) behave this way? I have Dunlop somthing or others on, and stock 2:73 gears.

I dont remember what my car was like when it was stock, didn't stay that way long, but when it was stock I am sure it would roast 1st with no problems, I had 2.73's....

That doesn't mean that your motor is stock though, It is hard to say.

Thanks for the replies folks. I know it's sort of a retarded question, but I am curious. According to the sticker in the door jam, the car has 2:73s. All I know is that the gears seem awfully tall. In 5th at 75mph, I'm at around 2k rpms (if that tells you anything). Who knows, maybe all GTs are like mine--maybe I just test drove a batch of slow ones. Mine has just been feeling a little crazy lately--like it would wheelie if the tires were fat enough. LOL. Not that I'm complaining.

Do you still have quad shocks? The wheel hop could be b/c they've been removed or are worn out.... You can get a good set from jd's performance or UPR for under $170

it sounds to me like you have 3.08's......thats what i got factory, and mines the same way in first gear........75mph.....2k rpms......i think thats where im at on the interstate, so, my guess is you have 3.08's, and might not have a stock engine either........check for the major things.......intake(manifold), heads, throttle body, stuff like that......it could be modified, but, my guess is stock engine, 3.08's from factory.

Hmm. Maybe I do have 3.08s. Is this possible even though my door jam indicates 2.73s? At any rate, the car has no external bolt-ons, other than a K&N in the fenderwell. I don't know...the car is probably stock. I guess the 3.08s would explain the acceleration and traction issues. I guess I'll get the car in the air, and verify the gearing this weekend (hopefully). Thanks again for the replies.
