Broken Gearbox?

Broken Gearbox?
Hello,
I have a 91 GT manual. I bought it as a project car, but suddenly lost interest after getting it. I would still like to drive it so I had a mechanic look at it because it was not taking any gears. When the mechanic first looked at it, he said the clutch was gone. So I purchased a King Cobra Clutch kit. When the mechanic started breaking things down to install the clutch, he came back and said, the clutch is fine..."the gearbox housing is broken."
Can this be done? Can a new Gearbox be bought?
He said it can be fixed by welding it.I decided to look for a new one, but I can't find them. Is that the correct name? "GearBox"?

RE: Broken Gearbox?
That's what I thought, but this guy was talking like they're different.
So can I weld the gearbox/transmission or purchase a new one? If I do, should I go for a higher performance one, or stick with stock?
Thanks.
