Default Performance Upgrades

Hello all; a FNG here.

I was thinking of getting a performance module for my 1994 GT, but before asking what everyone thought about them I did a few searches and found that most here are not big fans of them. Most would prefer that the money be spent else where and advance the timing in lieu of getting a chip.

I have two quesions then:
1.) How far do I advance the timing?

2.) If I plan to advance the timing, what mod for the saved $280 would you recommend to go along with the advanced timing to see the most impact (i.e. throttle body, pulley set, ect.)?

It's a bone stocker (other than K&N, but that's no real mod) with 80,000 on it. Please let me know what you think, and thank you for your opinions in advance!

I hear around 14* is good as long as you run premium. As for what to buy, it costs a little more than $280 but you need to get a full exhaust system.

For now I'd like to keep the ideas around the $280ish price range, but thanks for the input. You see, the $280 is the price of a Hypertech chip, which my wife was going to buy me for my birthday. After a little research, I find the money can be spent wisely elsewhere.

So, it would be an easy sell to the wife that I get something else for around $280 instead of trying to convince her that I should spend double that for the full exhaust system... I think the married guys may smell what I'm stepping in here.

To be honest, the hypertech would be a complete waste of money for you at this point in time. However, for $280, you can get a set of gears (3.73 for manual trannys, 4.10s for auto.) Gears are cheap and you can really feel the difference. It won't give you an increase in HP. Butit will feel like it because you will get faster acceleration and you will get into your powerband much faster. It's a GREAT cheap mod.

If you do happen to have an AODE (automatic) then you may be able to shop around and get a set of 4.10s and a shift kit for $280. Put those two together and it's like driving a whole new car!

Yeah, but for gears and install you're talking more than 280 most likely.

I'd install myself, and it is a 5 speed manual. My concern with gears is that I also use the car as a daily driver on occasion, and that means a lot of highway driving for me. It would most likely be O.K., I'd just be at a higher RPM on the highway.

Any other thoughts? Would a new throttle body give it some snap?

no to the throttle body. on gears. go 355's if you worried about rpms. still got some kick in the azz yet fairly easy on the interstate.

Sounds like a potential option.

How about pulleys? Worth the money w/ my application?

Maybe a new set of headers?

Yeah, many people will say they aren't worth it because of the minimal gain in hp compared to the cost. Also, people don't like them because of charging issues, but don't the 94-95s have the upgraded alt.?
