Great tips. If I like it, won't be able to drive it home today. No tag. Need to get a temp from DMV, but said I could tag it historically or antique?

ORIGINAL: 05RedHead

The clunking could be a rear end bushing too.

As far as other things to look for - with those motors, take an honest drive. Accel through the first 2 gears nice and slow, taking a deliberate and smooth pedal to high rpms. Listen/feel for misses. Also, I'd look at the belts - get an idea how well it's been maintained. Compression test?

I'm sure the more dedicated 5.0 crowd can give you some more specific pointers...so...bump!
the clunk when shifting is prolly the rearend, mine did that then started humming. those cars were made with a posi loc diffrential stock in the rearend and special handling suspension. the headlight switchs and manual window handles were famous for stripping out. smog pumps always locked up and smoked the belts. wheel hop was bad when spinning the tires. check the rear main seal and front main on motor and rear upper control pan. also check the shims in the front end. try putting it in gear before you start it without clutching and see if it clunks then. if it does you will be able to locate it easier.

Ok, been there and saw it. If anyone wants the #, pm me. Too much work for me. All I can say is, it had nice flowmaster duals. Back to the drawing board for me
