Ok thanks, lol well i meant your 86 looks good i didnt know how it ran. As for learning my school doesnt have a shop class on motors
and no one in my famlily really nows much about cars. So its hard. As for the 88 mustang i was thinking about i might buy if i can haggle price down a bit. I havent even seens it yey just a description of what my dad told me. As for paint i just want somthing that has decent shine and lasts. How much cheaper is it if you do body work urself, apperently my dad says ke knows how.

Yes I do understand its not a very practical first car, but i really like mustangs. I dont have any experiance on fixing cars so i dont want osmthing that needs work all the time. How unreliable is an 88 car? Would it be alot better if i got a late year fox or a sn 95 or watever you call em? Also how much is it to rebuild an engeine plus labor? what about paint and new apolstry? Also this is in canada so again it will probly be more $[:'(]. PS nice 4 eye shelty

Again.. Personal experience talking here... I bought my 78,000 mile, 100% stock, garage kept car from the second owner with NO signs of abuse, and immediately had to put about $1000 in it. Heater core, brakes, springs, motor mounts, and full exhaust. That's $1000 with me doing the work in my spare time (while I drove my other cars).
Don't get me wrong, bang for the buck you'll be hard pressed to buy a car that is more fun than a Fox Mustang. I love my car and I am very happy with it, but it IS old and people DO abuse these cars. Mine is a low miles garage car and it needed work... The one you're talking about sounds like a basket case. At the very least, hold out and buy a better one. $5k U.S. funds will buy you an AWESOME 5.0 hatch around here. If you start your experience with these cars on a positive note (i.e., with a good car) then it will probably continue to be a positive experience.
Ok... That's enough of my rant. Good luck on your hunt!

In 1995 I started driving with a 21 year old hand-me-down truck that was, and still is, a single - ASE Master Technican - owner truck... Best maintanence history ever. And I was still CONSTANTLY wrenching on it.. Old cars take work... Period..

If this is a Vancouver Island car, it shouldn't have seen any road salt (maybe just the salty ocean air), so the undercarriage is less likely to be rotted out than an "inland" vehicle.
When you wrote that it wasn't in good shape, what did you mean--mechanically, body, or both? A one owner lady's car is usually a better bet than one owned byyouraverage testosterone-driven male!
I have the same stock vehicle as the one your looking at (I bought it in 1989,and it has 64,000 km (42,000 miles) original as it just sits in the garage), I thinkIwould be lucky to get $3,000 for it in BC. With 250,000 km (150,000 miles) on the clock, and in less than excellent condition, the one you're looking at should be$1500 to$2,000. And as a previous post-er wrote, you will have lots of repair costs on this one--starting with the heater core (a bitc.. to replace--I've put in two already!!).The motor will need an overhaul probably sooner than later ($1,500-$2,000for a basic rebuild?), and the body is anyone's guess. Acheap paint job wouldnot fix the rust properly and would run about $3,000 (sky's the limit to have it done right!).Then figurenew tires, brake job,shocks,u-joints, etc.
I don't want to scare you off, but...it all depends on what the real condition of the vehicle is.If you want this one, make sure you bid LOW!You're talkingserious mileage and questionable maintenance on this puppy....
Don't rush into it, and have an inspection done prior to making anoffer. The inspection will let you know exactly what you're making an offer on.Most importantly, be prepared to walk away from the deal. There are LOTS of other5.0's out there. Best of luck....

Thanks gary, vancouver island isnt as bad as the mainland? We still get snow and it rains tons here. Are you comparing it to vancouver or prince george? Would vancouver be about the same? Also where are you looking at these prices? Can you show me some sites, ive been using craigslist, buysell and auto trader. Also 88 is speed densitty right, so is this bad? And yes it was lady driven yet it was daily driven and wans not garage kept i think. Ande i think my dad said it was pushing a bit of blue, does this mean the motor is shot? And what i meant by its not in good shape is its high kilometers, faded paint, interior is bad my dad said and its a bit smoky.

Haha, yeah, you just had to have that didn't you?
Haha, yeah, you just had to have that didn't you?
edit: I also deducted the price of the full system from what I acutally needed... I HAD to get a cat back... I elected to drop $1100 and do everything in stainless (included headers, bolts, etc, etc).
So... I HAD to put $1000 in my car right off the bat... I actually spent closer to $1800...

I was suggesting thatany rust would be relatively less than on an "inland" car, but it all depends on how much road salt is used in the area where the car spent the last twenty years.
My price speculation is just that--I've based that on what I've seen around here, in the local papers, the AutoTrader, etc., plus my gut guess based on my previous life as an auto insurance adjuster (hate to admit to that on this forum!).
Its a high mileage engine, so it's normal to puff some blue--and its a pretty sure sign that it needs an overhaul ($$$).
The speed density system is fine as long as you're not planning major changes--heads, cam, intake....thecomputer has no ability to adjust to the air flow changes that come with those mods. You can do a conversion to mass air, but again...$$$.
Overall, it sounds like the car is a real project. You will spend more time in the garage than onthe road, and it will eat gobs of cash. And it can become discouraging over time. If this is what you're looking for, then great, but bid LOW (IMHO it's a $1,500 car at best). If you're looking for something you can drive daily, and is reliable transportation (aside from your weekend tinkering)then I would pass on this puppy and look to spend more up front and get someone else's properly completed project.
I'm a big believer in sitting tight and keep a sharp eye out for what I call the "desperation sale"--divorce, illness, estate (someone just died), financial troubles, boredom, wife says enough--there are a million reasons why someone needs to dump their beloved 5.0. You need to be right there to help them out by taking the car off their hands at their most desperate moment--they're usually willing to deal low at that point. You might want to share my post with your dad, and my guess is, he would probably agree with what I've said.
Good luck, and don't let your cash burn a hole in your pocket--BE PATIENT. You will find a GOOD car out there.
