Default Engine Problem

Ok got the stang today, nice car, everything works, but it misses or something. Sometimes it seems like it is backfiring, and I didn't think a fuel inj. car was supposed to do that, lol. This is my first experience with a fuel inj. car. It has a Cobra top end, BBK air assembly,70mm Eddy TB, and I was told the car had a 303 cam. What could cause this? if it were carb'd I would think it is a timing issue.

It could still be a timing issue. I would take dizzy out and get #1 to TDC and restab it. That has to be spot on to run right. Even if you think it is right it could be off. It is worth a shot, it only takes a couple of minute's and if that do's not fix it then you can rule that out and keep searching.

I will try that, a local mustang guy that has a very good reputation told me to clean the MAF and then set initial timing at idle to 14, he said that should clear it up, if not he told me to reset the distributor like you mentioned, I need someone to give me a crash corse on the 5.0 motor as I have never built one, I have built alot of motors, just not any fords, what is the timing order what is the firing order on the engine,etc...etc...

Well I tried all the easy stuff, and while I was looking at the distributor I noticed something odd, the ignition module on the bottom of the dist. was touching the intake water housing, it was turned as far as it would go to the point of smashing up against the intake. So this tells me the dist. is not in correctly, it should have plenty of movement with the timing set,idk you guys tell me.

Ok got the timing and all that straightened out. Here is the problem, I am just cruising down the road and it loses all power, like it is trying to die. I push the gas and it just sputters, then it comes right back, what do you guys think this is, have any of you ever had this problem???

Is the miss all the time? At idle, during cruise, hard acceleration. You need to be more specific and descriptive about what's going on. What are the condition of the tune up parts?

When it starts missing, trying to die, it is all the time, cruise, idle, wot. All the parts look good, checked the dizzy, checked the maf, everything looks ok. There are not any engine lights on when it does this either,so idk if codes will pull or if they can be pulled. I will just be going down the road and wammo! it starts missing and dieing, kina like it is running out of gas or something. thanks for the help 50.

Not necessarily

What ignition tune-up parts are in there?
These engines can be very picky about plugs/wires
Even top quality thick "race wires" can cause these symptoms
Plugs too
Best to stick (or return) to stock, especially while you are sorting this thing out
Check the firing order too, and make sure none are real close to each other and jumping spark

What year engine?

Yeah depending on the year there can be many codes stored with no CEL
Pull them and see what, if anything , they say

Might want to check your fuel pressure...but that might not help unless it's actually missing/dying at the time

So is the problem intermittent? Does it run well at all and if so, when in the driving cycle. When it's cold and then as the engine warms up it becomes an issue? Maybe it is running out of gas. Do you have axcess to a f/p gauge?
