Headlights are literally smokin
My damn 86 headlights quit on me the other night, good time. The highs worked ifI held the lever back,I hit the switch with a hammer and came back on. Got a new switch, installed it and from moving the wires around the electiral tape that someone else spliced wires together came off whereI couldn't see.. Turned lights on, went to the front then car then back inside and the carwas full of smoke.I have to remove the dash to get to these wires.Another project before i can start my project of changing lower intake and water pump.

I had a similar problem. My driver side headlight got some water in it, and eventually it popped the bulb while it was hot/on. The normal lights wouldnt work, but when I put on the high beams it would smoke. I just replaced my popped bulb and it worked fine from then on. My guess would be the splice job on the wires already there. You are getting contact from something you dont want somewhere in the line. Did you try sorting the wires better? or maybe even replacing them?

dude pulling the dash in your 86 is a peice of cake man...will take like under 10 minutes...i have a sticky under the tech stuff on how to do it...but if your not familiar...the top of the dash (like the dash pad) has like three or four screws holding it in, pull those out, then slide the whole top of the dash out, then there are again like 4 screws holding the gauge panel in and then it comes out, and then you gotta unhook all the connections, and you can get easy access to all the wires then...at least its not an 87 or later!

If you are working on your headlites you may want to do this wiring change. I did it and it works great. It allows you to have your fog lites on without headlites on. Also, it prevents a lot of power flowing though thin wires.
Its sounds a little complex, but i did it in a couple hours. I heat shrinked everthing so it took a little longer.
