Default Timing gun question

I never used a timing gun before and I can't find out how to use it, I know how to find the degree. I just don't know how to set it up to to spark plug.

clamp for the plug wire goes on the #1 plug wire and the pos and neg clamps go to the battery make a mark with a paint marker usually white on your balancer..one at 0 degrees btdc and another at 10 degrees btdc and then remove the spout connector and start the car up and rotate the distributor until the pointer is lined up at 10 degrees and go no further than 14 and at that setting I'd run 93 octane if they sell that where you live like here

Ok I seen the gun, and it has a spring on it, so the spring connects to the #1 plug, and go inside the plug wire also? I would say yea but wana make sure

If your fairly stock, you should not advance timing past 12-14 degree's. How far are you advancing it? Find someone to give you hand.

I advanced it to 14 degrees, according to the balancer.

I would only advance it to 8 or 10, I'm guessing you dont have a heavy modded engine so I'd just set it at like 10 dont go to crazy.
