proper fluids and preventative maintenance??
Ok, so I'm working on a 1990 GT convertible with around 70k on it and the t5, car is mechanically stock with a smog pump and no mods.
this is my first mustang or ford and I'm not real sure on what fluids and filters I should be using?
I deliver pizza in this car to pay the bills so it idles a lot and I'm not real sure when the last round of maintenance was done to this car since I just bought her.
I'm wanting to change the oil, coolant, brake fluid, tranny fluid, rear end oil, and whatever else y'all tell me to change. are there any synthetic fluids to avoid?
thanks for your time
-Ship
-K&N Air Filter
-Motorcraft Oil Filter (don't use fram)
-synthetic motor oil (any will work, most people really like Mobil 1)
-GM Synchromesh tranny fluid
-Prestone coolant
-Royal purple gear oil for rear end
-and any brake fluid will work, i think these cars use DOT 3
I'd also replace the cap, rotor, spark plugs, spark plug wires, and possibly ignition coil. Do all of that and the car will run like new, or probably better.

using a 5.0 for pizza delieveries lol, all you check + tips are going into gas [8D]
well, I would try synthetic first, but be warned it might cause leaks that regular oil was plugging up
for oil filters - Motorcraft FL-1A(Fram is the worst)
for oil - theres various oils that will be recommended, but stick with the name brand
for tranny fluid - ATF(yes T5s use ATF)
for air filter - K&N reuasble filter(Fram is crap)

I bought mobil 1 initially, but I figured it would leak, there are some spots under her after sitting a while, don't really wanna make that worse. The car also came with a K and N oil filter?
Just popped my hood and it does have an MSD coil,, sorry I really haven't played with the car too much.
Will a synthetic brake fluid work? I have some valvoline SYN power full synthetic says exceeds dot 3 and 4 and compatible with conventional brake systems.. I used to work on mercedes and the old brake systems were pretty picky, that's why I'm nervous.

this car gets about 200 miles per tank delivering pizza.. not too bad considering my other option which is a 5.9 liter dodge ram.
I was going to try and lighten it somehow before I remembered I weigh 275lbs.
should I go with all ford parts on the plugs, wires, cap and rotor? I usually always go stock with unmodified cars
thanks for the shopping list, hopefully this will smooth my idle out a little bit and keep her running good.

K&N oil filter is alright, but change to FL-1A when you do the next oil change
syn brake fluid isnt really necessary, the regular stuff is more then fine
all ford stuff is never a bad thing, but just to save abit of money Motorcraft plugs are Autolite #25 Coppers,
for wires, you could go motorcraft also, but check autozone for their bosch wires, lifetime warrenty FTW if they still have it

Just my $.02, but i think syntheticoil is worthit even if you have a small leak. In my experience anyway, the little bit extra it leaks is worth the added protection that synthetic provides (especially in a car you're going to be driving alot in the city).
