My First 'Stang
Up 'till now I've been dickin' around with my SHO, trying to get it to go fast. I came up with a budget of 10 grand. But I soon realized that if speed was my goal, then I could go and put together a MUCH faster mustang for the same price. The only thing is that I'm having a hard time deciding what to buy.
That being said, here is what I'm looking to get: I want an '87-'93 body with five star rims, probably something like this: http://s2.photobucket.com/albums/y43...tangAround.jpg
I would like the dash to look similar to this, minus the tach: http://s2.photobucket.com/albums/y43...t=NiceDash.jpg
I'd like to have a brand new interior, new bucket seats, carpet, etc.
As for the engine, that's where I get confused. I intend to drive this vehicle on the street only, never on the strip, only racing the occasional ricer here and there. So, I'm looking to get the highest quality turbo I can afford (probably not much for a 10,000 dollar street car) and slap it on the highest quality crate engine I can afford, maybe a 302-351 stroker. I want a plenty of speed (400rwhp-500rwhp) without sacrificing reliability (I don't wanna have to fix up a virtually new car every few months).
I want to have all new or rebuilt accessories under the hood (no a/c), UDPs, and straight pipes going to flowmasters in the back (emissions not a problem).
I'm guessing I'll need to find the crate engine for around $2000-$3000 and the turbo for no more than $1000-$2000. Between me and a buddy there is little we can't do, so labor is not a factor.
I know that to stay under 10 thousand dollars I will not be buying top-of-the-line products, but I don't really know how big of a sacrifice that is.
Given this information, I would love to have your opinion on the following:
1) What is the best engine/turbo combination I can get?
2) Where can I get those?
3) Any other helpful information
Thank you much.

well you sound decided and undecided at the same time to me.
to make 500 true hp you need a stroker and a power adder if your going small block
now w/ a blower/turbo car your making increased cylinder pressure every time you turn it over and run it. since your looking for decent hp w/ occasional thumpings i think your a perfect guy for some spray.
personally this is what i would do on $10k budget
1) find a clean low miles 5.0 you like in the $5k-$6k range
2) use the stock block and either stroke it, or at minimum do HCI swap, w/ concentration on port matching the intakes to each other and to the heads, then work on the heads exhaust ports, decent porting, then some cleanup of the intake ports of the heads.
you can make a true 350-400 hp car right there , add a 150kit of juice , and you'll see easy 10's on the nitrous, probably run hi 1's to low 12's on the motor which is no slouch either.
imo, thats the cheapest best way to get 500 hp, and be really streetable. blowers make a lot of heat, i'm against them by any means, but i would end up spraying anyways on top of ablower and would rather spend the money on port work or whatever else.

The only thing about that is I'd rather not mess around with the internals of the engine itself personally. That's why I was thinking crate motor. You're deffinitely right, though. I'd save some money going that route.
I have not yet considered nitrous, mainly because I have no experience with it, but I'm glad you mentioned it. That doesn't hurt the motor after many uses, does it? I really don't know much about it. Thank you for the response.

if used properly and installed properly and tuned properly nitrous is safe. its just people that half a$$ it that blow their engines and think they can throw a 200 shot at it w/o doing n e thing else.
but as for turbos im sure r.barn w/ drop in. but you can get a good turbo kit for about $3k. anything less than that will most likley be garbage. and you can get 400hp out of that on a stock engine... you dont need a crate motor. use the stock 5.0 and just mod that. messing w/ the internals of an engine is really not all that hard from what ive seen. just working on it in the car is the hard part.
read this https://mustangforums.com/m_3538994/mpage_8/key_/tm.htm its very helpful. (page 8-10)
you can also pick up a reman cobra long block from ford for about $2200. if you dont want to be messin w/ internals. but i would swap the cam out of that anyways. good luck

I agree with nitrous_bobthat sounds like the safest and most realistic idea.
