Default Engine Rebuild

Hey guys,

I've kinda been thinking about getting the 5.0 rebuilt, but am unfamiliar with this. What exactly does an engine rebuild consist of? Is it a complete teardown and rebuild? And what kind of price range should I be expecting for a rebuild?

Thanks guys.

oh yea, anyone from the Oakville, Ontario area know any good places to go?

compelte teardown and rebuild yes...

without gettin too involved....

heres the basic quick rundown..

overbore and hone, usualy .030 over,or .040 if the cyl walls dont clean up at .030
either polish,or grind the crank mains and rods .010
new cam bearings,rod bearings,crank bearings,piston rings,pistons,gaskets,seals

of course it gets way more in depth, but thats what a basic rebuild will most likely get you.

you should be able to get your shortblock rebuilt in the neighborhood of 600/1500...it all depends on what you want, and how much you have to pay for the rebuild kit, what they charge for labor, etc etc.

if this is a car you plan on keeping,or plan on doing performance mods too,DONT SKIMP on the machine work to the motor,or the parts going in the motor. it then becomes a matter of when the engine will fail, not if it will.

a quick example, the motor i built my buddy,he started from scratch,4cyl notchback car...so he had to find everything.

i think he had a little over 2200 in his motor by the time we got it in his car

that included all the needed machine work
new forged pistons, arp rod bolts, main girdle and arp head and main studs.
custom ground cam
gt40 heads and intake, that i ported for him
and bbk headers,of course there was other stuff,it was basically a compelte running motor with wiring harness

he sourced the maf, wiring, computer and other piddly stuff used,he even bought a used nitrous kit with that same 2200,i rebuilt the solenoids for him...the car goes 12.70s on motor all day long, dead nuts reliable, its went 11.20s on a 150 shot.

most people when they rebuild a 5.0 they add performance also at the sametime so price range can greatly vary.....but you can expect to spend at least 2000.00 for a generic rebuild all the way up to 6000.00 for a complete H/C/I with all supporting mods

why do you want to rebuild it...any problems?? if none major you may be able to put in new rings, bearings and hone the cylinders and have a basic valve job done on the heads and all seals and gaskets replaced and if you do all the work minus the heads job then my guess is you'll only have 1000.00 to 1200.00 max in it

+1

you'll save a good deal of money taking the motor out yourself, and taking it to a machine shop.

take them a stripped down longblock{leave the heads on,timing cover on,and oil pan on} but take EVERYTHING else off yourself..if you feel confident in your abilitys to do so,reassembly and installation is easy.

Haha just run her till she blows! Anything lower than 2 grand for an already built remanufactured 5.0 motor would be a steal.

I'm not a 'noobie'. I used to post here a few years back under a different login. This account is a noobie one. I don't see the criticism of my statement either? Was it the price bit?
