Default Air pump delete???

I have an 89 GT and I am just starting to do some minor changes. I have no plans to build it into a race car but no plans to stay completely stock either. I guess what my question is: If i remove the air pump will it cause me any problems? And what do I need to do with the tubes/lines that plugged in along the air lines? I know I will need to buy a pump delete bracket to stick with the stock belt. But what do I need to do to totaly delete the pump? And do i need to cover up any holes that are now open becaue of removing the air lines? I am not sure I am being really clear on all this, but I hope someone understands where I am coming from, and what I am wanting to do. Thanks for your help.

Default RE: Air pump delete???

If you want to keep your stock belt than yes you will have to buy the air pump delete kit so you still have a pulley in the stock place. Summit will carry them. There should be 2 vaccum lines for your smog pump. These lines are connected to the air bypass valve and the air diverter valve. These are in line from the hoses that are connected to your air pump. Simply take the vaccum lines off and just plug them. Pull all the rubber hose off that you take off the air pump. These hoses will be connected to 2 metal lines. One is connected to the back of the heads. Runs from one side to the other. Kind of a pain to get to, so be patient. After you get this pipe off you will have a hole in each head that will need to be plugged off. I believeyou will need a 5/8-11 course thread bolt to do this. The second metal line is ran down to your crossover pipe. You will have to get under your car to get this off. After you get this line off you can either plug the inlet for this or just pinch the pipe shut, up to you. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the help, sounds like i have some fun times ahead of me with that pipe that goes to the heads. Is it possible to just plug it instead of removing it from the heads? Or is that a bad idea? Again thanks for the help.

Very true, but if he wants to stick with the stock belt, have to get the pulley.

Default Removing smog pump from '92 5.0 HO

Sorry to bring up the old subject again but, I'm new to the Forum. I'm building a 49 F-1 pickup for my son's first ride. We stuck a '92 5.0 HO motor with a AOD trans (for driveability). Since we are shooting for a clean compartment, all the extra stuff has to go. I'm asking the experts, if we go with the smaller belt, will we have any issues with the A/C pump and idler pulley. I wrapped a string around the apparent route and the belt will be close to rubbing. Any help would be great.

just turn your air pump into a vacuum pump and get 20hp out of it....course it wont last long but you can always upgrade to a proper vac pump down the road
