Firewall near the wiper motor. It is a black box with a vacuum line and an electrical plug on it. Make sure it has no vacuum leaks.

Heres a link to ckeck for engine codes yourself.http://myshifter.com/joel50/EECTEST.html
Also you may want to try the idle relearn at the bottom of this link.

hey... you need to do an Idle Setting Procedure, if you've checked all the obvious things and nothing adds up... I think you need to do this after installing that speed density..
1.) Get engine to operating temperature.
2.)Disconnect IAC solenoid. If engine stalls, turn throttle-stop screw in one full turn and restart. Repeat as necessary until engine will idle with IAC unplugged.
3.)Set idle using throttle stop. (Idle speed will very depending on engine modifications) Set to comfortable or desired idle speed.
4.)Set TPS anywhere from .96 to .98 volts. = loosening mounting screws and lightly rotating TPS (if u can't obtain the desired range, u may need to make mounting holes slightly larger - drill)
5.) TPS wires to be probed are usually the GREEN and BLACK wire, (also gray/red or gray/white are the other posb)
6.)Stop engine, disconnect negative on battery, sit for 20mins, and tap the brakes and turn the headlights on/off a few times
7.) Reconnect IAC solenoid
8.) Reconnect battery
9.) Start engine and repeat until correct idle is gained...
I you may have mass air meter problems or a vacuum leak, so check for that...... most mustangs idle like **** bc no one does this FORD PROCEDURE...

RE: 1988 5.0 wont idle!
there is an old tsb from ford about this ... I think all 5.0 cars have this problem at some time... the tsb was about the vaccum solenoids that are located behind the right strut tower .. all emissions related.... I wll see if i can get it posted here in a few .

the hose to the map sensor had a hole so i replaced it and i also fixed the gaskets from the TB 2 egr plate (the egr plate awas a b**** to take off!!!!) and egr plate 2 upper manifold. it runs cleaner and sounds better. but still kinda idles bad. but i drove for a good bit and it got close but never died. hmmm.
and thanks cholericfc im gonna try that.
