Steering Column Swap?
Haven't posted here in a while but I figured I'd ask anyways. I miss the tilt steering from my 87 GT, right now I have a 92 LX and was thinking about swapping out the steering column to a steering column that has tilt steering. Just wondering what yall thought and if theres a write up or a tech article on it. Heck is it even possible? I know there will probably be problems with the airbag and stuff, but it doesn't matter to me if I get rid of the airbag and all of its equipment. Just let me know if its possible and if anyone here has done it before. Thanks,
yes its very possible ..
i actually just did mine 2 months ago .. there are write ups on them ill have to look for the link but they are really not that necessary ..all you need is the 89 and under tilt column and shroud .. the 90 plus shroud will not work right ..
everything bolts right up .. all the electrical switches match .. you will have to swap out the combination switch (the blinker)and possible the ignition .. not sure if i switched the ignition or not ..
all in all its a pretty easy job .. hardest part is unbolting the column in the engine bay .. rather than go for the knuckle i just removed the one bolt and nut holding the shaft in the sleeve ..
.. the only thing i dont like is that you can see a lil of the rubber behind the shroud .. but i was thinking of having a custom fiberglass extension put on the shroud other than that i love it ..
oh also your airbag light will stay blinking unless you remove it .. and although it didnt happen to me there is a blue box behind the radio which some people say will beep if you remove the airbag and not the box but i never touched the box and havent heard any beeping ..
heres a link to my page where there are a few pics of how it came out , just scroll down theres alot of pics ...
