Default 331 stroker or H/C/I 302

I have been milling over a power adder for my 89 gt since I got it a few weeks ago. I have looked over every thing from turbos, to superchargers, to nitrous, to top end work, to increasing displacement. I wanted some opinions as to what performs better. A 331 stroker, but the top end completely stock, or an H/C/I swap on the stock 302? Since I am a college student on a limited budget I can only afford to do one this year. IfI go with the stroker I would upgrade the top end next year to sqeeze all the power possible out of the engine, and if I did the top end swap this year I would probably get a nitrous set up next year. Basically what I am looking for is will an h/c/i 302 give me better numbers than a 331 stroker with stock heads, cam, and intake?

Yes, a good head/cam/intake upgrade on a 302 will make more power that a 331 with stock parts. If you decide to stroke it don't stop at 331, there is no reason to not go 347.

If I'm not mistaken the 331 is only an increased stroke, not the bore so this can be done cheaper than the 347 would be. I do have a budget so I really can't afford to have the work done boring the block out.

Well than 342, but either way your therory is BassAckwards. If you stroke aengine you have all of the machine work done, zero deck, line hone, manufluxed, sonic checked, and bored (if wanted). With a stroker you will also have to have therotating assembly balanced and the block clearance.Do it right the first time. So if don't have enough money to bore out a block don't go stroker.

Again,If you don't have enough moneyto bore a block how do you expect to be able to afford heads, cam, and intake?

Go with the H/C/I, less labor better numbers, better on the wallet.

I was only saying that doing a 331 was cheaper according to the shop I would have build it. And you can buy H/C/I kits for about 2500, or you could build your own for about 3000. For a 331 stroker the cost would be about 5000, and for the 347 he wanted 6000-7000 grand.

A 342 is is the same as 347 with stock bore. And the machining differences and rotating assembly costs are not 1000-2000 dollar difference. Find a new machine shop, he is full of crap. Or contact Jim Woods at http://www.fordstrokers.com/for a good short block. You will have to email him through the site or call him because he doesn't have everything listed on the site. You also can't beat his customer service and tech advice.
