Default timing

ok
so i was checking my timing today
and my pointer shows that i am at like 30 degrees
theres a mark on 10 and that spot sits between the pointer and the little circular thing on the pointer
any ideas why it says in that high?
i have no pinging or anything, it just backfires sometimes and bogs down when its warm

You did check it while the car was running right? The degree you want should be at the pointer.

to check base timing you should check it with spout connector removed and as fastblack stated the pointer shouls point to the degree / setting you desire

wow
of course i did
spout removed
all that stuff
it runs decent it seems minus the bogging and backfiring so it doesnt feel like the timing is really that far off

If it is reading 30 at idle that is too high, i dont care how it runs you need to lower base timing to around 10-12. 30 sounds more liketotal timing which would not come in till about 2500-3000 rpms. I read 33 all the time but my distributor is locked out, i'm sure you would know if yours was. Back the timing off and see how it runs.
