RE: Race Gauge Pods?????
Honestly fellas, when I bought the car the previous owner already had the backing plate. He had a mechanical speedo in there and all the wires were scotch locked. IT WAS A MESS! Wires of the same color, gauges of wire all effed up, turn signal and warning lighs inop, gauge needles bouncing all over every time I went over a bump..... he had it hacked all to hell
I removed the carpet, dash, seats and console last year to replace the heater core, rewire nitrous switches, my fan switch, ALL the instrumentation and install an alarm. I added a few antitheft devices of my own...one including the control side of my fuel pump relay running through the seatbelt switch. I also decided to convert the mechanical speedo to electric, so no more hunting down the right speedo gear and dealing with low speed "bouncies".
It was a total PITA. I robbed two 16 pin connectors off a scrap harness and ran literally duplicated the factory cluster wiring. Wrote my own diagram and everything for it. The whole shebang unplugs with two connectors and is solid as a rock.
It is a project that will have your garage a mess and your patience run quite thin. It would have been easier tostartwith nothing. But, a few hundred bucks and a few months work got me a completely redone dash. Put carpet in too, so short of seats the interior is completely done. I have one LITTLE flaw in the interior (headlight switchbezel \/). Someone had a monster tach mounted and there are still holes there so I have to replace that when I come across another black one.
Go with the black if you can. The alluminum is too glary in the evening. Kinda wish I had a black backing.
