How to check push rod length on a hyd. setup
I was just woundering how I would go about checkin the push rod length on a hyd. roller lifter. I mean I know how I would do it on a solid lifter but the pre-load factor is throwing me off, do I put my adj. push rod at a length that I think is close and pre-load the lifter a 1/2 turn and turn the motor over a few times to see ware the roller rocker left its mark? I'm not to sure beacuse the pre-load, and i would think that with the motor not running the pre-load would change when the valve spring compresses.

you need to color tips of valvestems and get the right length determined first then once you have correct centering of roller tip on stem adjust polylock so push rod has slight drag while turning then give it a 1/4 to 1/2 turn past that and lock it down

Yea I understand that i want to color the valvestems(Sharpie) to see ware the make is but i dont understand ware to start, Is there a rough length to set the adj. push rodwhen startingor do I adj. it till I get a zero lash. Then when I have foundthe starting length do i turn the motor over at a zero lash or do i per-load the lifter then turn over the motorto see ware the roller rocker leaves its mark.

Yes, you're exactly right. The hydraulic lifter will collapse without oil pressure, and you won';t be able to measure it correctly.
You have two choices. 1. Take the lifter apart. Remove the springs, and stack up some washers in there to make it a solid lifter. 2. Checking springs. These are very light weight springs that do little more than hold the valve closed against gravity.

Hey I just found this link that pretty much answered my questions about the whole push rod length problem.
http://www.mustangcentral.net/tech/geometry.htmlnow my only question about the trickflow link ware they talk about turning a hyd. roller lifter into a solid lifter, i understand how to convert it over to a solid but its the grinding .020 in. off the main plunger, i now they do that to make up for the pre-load on a hyd. lifterbut what is .020 equal to, like a 1/4 turn or a 1/2 of pre-load on a hyd. roller?
