Default Best exhaust for 87 GT

My sons 87 GT has stock exhaust and he wants to hear it roar. I am looking for something that is not so loud at idle and gets loader when you get on it. Some classic mustang sound. Price and ease of installation are also important as he will be paying and we will be installing together. What do you all suggest? thanks, Guy

exhaust on a stang is one of the easiest things to do.

Start off with a set of unequal length BBK shorty headers, get a Mac pro-chamber, and a catback of your choice... the majority of th forum will tel you to get flowmasters.. Dare to be different... Try magnaflow, mac, SLP (well maybe not SLP.. its quite loud)

If you want the classic mustang sound then either go with the Flowmasters or Mac. Magnaflows sound really good too.

Thanks for the replies so far. I would rather leave the headers alone for now. What about cats?? thanks Guy

If you want it to be on the quiet side at idle keep your cats. Minus SLP LM1s most other aftermarket exhausts should be reasonable volume with the stock cats. Without cats though, almost any catback is going to be pretty loud.

IMO i would do headers unless you don't plan on doing them for a long time. I wish i took pics of theuninstall/ install when i did headers to show how easy it was. Also pics of the bends and pinches that make stock headers restrictive. Seeing a pic of a stock header next to a aftermarket header will make you cringe.
