Default strut question

this might be a stupid question but im replace the struts in my 89 and everything if off and out of the car and now i cant seem to get the top bolt off the old strut.... when i twist it it just turns the lower part of the assembly and when i hold that it turns the top of the assembly.... when i hold both ends it doesnt turn...at ALL...

is this something were i need to use air tools or am i just an idiot and missing something?

Thanks,
Nathan

Air tools would definitely be the best way to go if you have them.
If you know someone at a shop or service station you could ask them to break them lose and then drive home and remove them.
Other than that they're a bi%#h to brake lose but it can be done.

if your not worried about the old struts get you some vice grips and get some body to hold them while you loosen the nut

I don't see why everyone takes everything apart and then complains when they can't get the top nut loose. That is the first thing that comes off when I did mine and then when the strut compresses I just unbolt the lower part and it comes right out. I know the haynes manual says to loosen the plates and all but why????? But likes said before use come vice grips and a helper. Air tools are definitly your best friend.
