mass air question
I finally figured out what I am supposted to do to change my 86 to mass air but I am a bit confused on the last part. My car does not have cruise control and the pins in the wiring harness do not have anything in slot 3 and 6. The information that I have received suggest that I may have to add 2 pins to the eec unit in the 3 and 6 slot connected to the wiring located in the drivers side kick panel. This eight wiring plug is supposed to run from the drivers kick panel under the driver seat and branch off into the transmission hump. I dont see anything going to the transmission! Some people say that not connecting the vehicle speed sensor may cause stalling problems. Can anyone help me as to what I need to do?
Thanks
Thanks
If your car is a 5 speed, you will need to run the VSS, if it is an auto, you will be able to get away without it. I had to add it to mine and basically what I did was go and buy some pins from http://fordfuelinjection.com and a VSS from ebay, and the VSS harness from ford and wired it it per these directions:

It has been a few years since I did the swap, but I will help in anyway I can.

I converted my 86 and never hooked up a VSS wire and it runs great, plus it is a manual. You do have to in fact run the fuel pump monitor wire to the fuel pump relay under the driver's seat. I'm not sure which wire it is on the relay, it was over two years ago that I did the conversion. If I remember correctly you had to swap the pins yo usaid and add a pin in order to hook up the fuel pump monitor circuit that I mentioned. I got my conversion wiring kit from eBay, from Inovative something or another company and it came with all the neccessary instructions and a wiring diagram of the computer system.
The only thing that I notice with not having the VSS wire hooked up, which is sooo minor, is that if you're cruisin' along at a speed and push the clutch in right away, the RPMS drop but takes maybe 2 seconds to return to idle. The RPMs drop to like 1100 right away. Now if you just decel in gear for a bit thn push in the clutch, it drops to idle instantly. Really super minor if you ask me. And, btw, I'm using an A9L computer which is for a manual car.

^^^ See, I didn't hook up the fuel pump monitor and i don't have any issues. I tried it with out either at first and my car stalled out every time I slowed...I had to add a VSS. Does your car have cruise? I know that is isn't the same from car to car, but the only down side to not having the fuel pump monitor hooked up is I get a code, but who cares, no CEL in SD cars anyway
Thanks for the input...it was very helpful! I am going to try it without the vss wired. I have done everything else including the fuel pump monitor. I will take it for a test drive today. I thought I would get the mass air squared away before the engine swap...I bought a 91 complete drive line out of shotgun customs mustang that had only 29,000 miles before it was crashed. Oh yeah, the engine happen to have a paxton s/c on it. I know nothing about s/c but I guess I will be learning fast with a bit of help from you guys.
Thanks again

My car does not have cruise control and is a 5 speed. I started the car today...didn't get to drive it but will tomorrow. I hope I can get away with not installing the vss. I did notice after running for about 5 mins that the idle seem to surge....I noticed the hose going underneath to the intake was not block completely. That is the same vacuum line that goes to the map sensor that is supposed to be blocked off. I hope that is the problem with the surging. I'll post some pics of the car in the coming days....It is a 86 lx coupe not a ding on the whole car...very straight and I have had the car for 10 plus years. I have put about 5000 miles on the car in ten years. It is about time to start driving it more!!!! Thanks again for your help. Do you know anything about paxton superchargers? This will be my next project.
