If you have never installed gears, take them to a qualified mechanic; yes you will have to check the back lash, set all the preload on the pinion bearing, crush coller...its really a lot of work!...I would also get a rear axle bearing kit for the install....

If you get a few decently mechanical friends to help out and a few good tech write ups you should be ok...just go slow and remember EXACTLY how you took everything apart, like, down to the "This side of the washer was facing this direction" that way when you start putting things back together it will go smooth.

But then again, a mechanic is a proffesional, and if he breaks it, you can get it fixed...if you break it, you have to pay to get it fixed.

We handled it in an afternoon with 3 competent guys, its not that hard, but as previously stated, attention to details

i finished my first one myself without issue.....so far

no noises or anything with mine. just a good write up, about 5 hours of freetime and a friend's 12ton press + specialty tools to finish up the job properly.

when i did mine we didn't use the special tool. we used some method a guy wrote about where you can get by without it, you'll have to look it up. but we checked the patterns of them after we used this method and it turned out perfect. and setting the crush collar is easy if your patient. i ruined one of mine, so it took longer than expected. get knowledgeable friends, a few beers, a good radio, and atleast 3 write ups, and your good to go. also its much much easier if you take the rear out of the car

I wouldn't dare attempt to swap rear end gears by myself, too easy to screw up and too many special tools needed. Just take it someplace that does these swaps on a regular basis, I still wouldn't even trust the job to "just a mechanic"

I have installed gears 3 times....just the time spent...and being on the ground on my back...I'd just spend the $200-300 to have them installed...

Jus take it to a good mechanic
u would need a dial indacator for back lash, and marking compound for wear pattern.
