ASE certified?
you either have to pass a test hands-on/paper that shows your qualified in brakes, diagnosis, etc etc.
or you can take classes that teach you all that stuff then take the test. it allows you to get paid more and get hired at reputable shops like dealerships

The biggest advantage to ASE is it shows people you take your business seriously. It pays off when job hunting and when you get you Master Cert you walk into a shop and tell them what it takes to get you into their shop. It's a real asset to your profession. If you plan on working on car for a living I would highly advise it. It's money in the bank
Talk to who you work for and see if they will pay for it. I use to recouped my guys cost for each test they passed. I also gave them 1.50 more per hour (flat rate) each time they got a new certification.
I think it should be pointed out that it's hardly a matter of just taking a test. ASE was formed because of crap, sheister mechanics, and as such the standards are very high. ASE cert means a lot because the failure rate is something like 70-80%. If you can get an ASE cert it shows at the VERY least you have a good familiarity with the subject in which you're certified.
You have to have two years of documeted work experiance or two years of trade school or certain combos of the two. You can't just take the test or study up and take it. If this is what you want to do for a living find a place to gain some real world experiance under a Master Technician. My advice would be to find another way to make a living and do the car stuff as a hobby.
