Default identifying gears

My buddy picked up some gears on craigslist, ther suppose to be 3.73s, with a richmond install kit for 150 bucks. well the gears are new but dont have any kind of stamp on them, theres like a little cleaned spot with numbers wrote on there but they dont say the ratio. is there any way to identify them. Can i just count the teeth or is that not liable.

Count the teeth on the ring & divide (/) by the teeth on the pinion = gear ratio

....its like 41 / 11 = 3.73 from what I remember ...
