Default Transmission Problems...

Hey guys I have a 91 GT with a 5 speed and I'd say about 50% of the time when I put it in reverse it grinds pretty bad, it goes into reverse no problem but grinds. Also in pretty much every gear under heavy acceleration it makes noise. It shifts fine and everything it just makes a loud noise at high RPM. What do you think this could be and how much money would it take to get it fixed?

high pitched whine in the upper rpms? could be low on fluid. check fluid level.

does it grind in any other gear?

reverse usually always grinds because it doesnt have a syncro/blocker set up, you cant really help it. just put it in 5th before shifting in reverse to stop the shaft from spinning for easier engagement, this will stop the grinding

yeah 1-3 stops in 4th. its not really a high pitch sound its more of a "pinging" (best word I can use to describe it)

hmm i was thinking it could have been the countershaft bearings if it was a whine. have you changed the fluid in it since you bought it? try changin it out and it doesnt matter if you get good fluid i go cheap when i'm testing things. if that doesnt help it, get a re-build kit they're pretty cheap

Mine does the same thing. Wines in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and quits wining in 4th. Changed the fluid with no change. I'm sure its about to grenade on me soon so I'm getting it checked out this weekend. I will let you know what they tell me.

if it's doing that, it needs a rebuild. it's not gonna explode or anything it should be fine for awhile longer but it could definitely use it

Now that I think about it sometimes it has problems going into reverse and 5th gear. Not all the time but it does happen. If I were to get a shop to rebuild it how much would that run?

it's hard to say really since shops don't all go by one standard rate. some guys i've talked to said they would rebuild it for 400 bucks if you brought them the kit and the trans out of the car
or, if you're feeling adventurous lol you could always look up the step by step guide on how to rebuild a t-5 and try it yourself
