Default Tuning question

So, I have a few questions about tuning. I'm quite familiar with almost everything on cars except for computers. Thankfully my chevelle doesn't have one, no worries on that for me.

So I'm a newb at tuning, admitted. When do you need a tuning device? When do you need a dyno tune? What sensors screw with stock computers? What all comprises a tune, and how would you go about tuning, even on a dyno? When is a new computer required, if it is?

I'm asking because, after modifying almost everything on the car to support motor mods(new trans, rear end(gears), suspension, brakes, wheels), I'm ready to start on the motor. The only thing engine related that I have modified is a full exhaust, even though they are just short headers, pulleys, no air silencer, and a timing bump. I had a CEL off and on since I got the car, when it had a stock H and headers. That doesn't concern me because it hasn't affected performance.

Thanks, let me know.

What do you tend to do with the car? the Ford EEC can take a lot of mods before you will run into to many issues with it. when it starts driving bad and you cant get it worked out you may need a tune. or when you want every last HP out of the parts that you have then a tune is good. With a power adder it would help to get a tune not aways a must do but it would help when you start moving up to big injectors it helps. If I was you I would save up and get some thing that you can change the tune with like a Tweeker or a Megasquirt or a PMS or the AEM you know something that you can change as you grow so you don't have to keep having the chip re burnt.

Team Chevelle? Yes.

Well eventually the entire motor is getting rebuilt/replaced. Either stroked or a bigger block.

That's why Im redoing everything around the motor now, even though I'll eventually need a couple other things changed, like 28 to 31 spline carrier and probably a higher capacity transmission.

At the very least, stroker HCI and supercharger... quite possibly this summer.
