Default Distributer Manipulation?

Hey guys!

Got an older dizzy that I gotta use for now, think it's either out of an '84 or '85 not sure.. (motorcraft c9zf-12121-a, other numbers... 12127). It's ford blue... gross.. Can I swap Caps from my '92 dizzy to this one? I was already planning on putting a new o-ring and changing the gear.. but can I just swap out the complete shaft from my '92 dizzy to this one? see, the gears are in the same place on both, but the '92 has about a 1/2" of extra tube at the end where the oil hex shaft goes in, compared to the old one... which concerns me.. your thoughts? Thanks!

don't quote me on this but I don't believe you can I took the cap off of my 85's dizzy and put it on my 91 but after I did I tried to start the car and it sounded like it wasn't firing

Ya, I was pretty sure I couldn't switch caps but figured I'd take a shot.. o well, I can deal with the blue for now.. but I can't deal with the oil pump binding up... Hope the shaft isn't a problem...
