Default Clutch issues

I just recently bought a 91 Mustang 5.0 and i was aware that it had issues going into 1st gear but all i would do is put it in 2nd then it would go right into 1st. i was teaching my nephew how to drive standard last night so it involved a lot of clutch use and a couple stalls but he wasnt able to get it into 1st gear after a while so i tried and i wasnt able to either.. i tried doing 2nd to 1st and that didnt work either and it would only go into 3rd. i had to drive it home in 3rd the whole way. i got home and turned it off and then tried pushing the clutch and going into 1st and it went in. it went into all the gears i tried putting it into while it was off. it doesnt grind when i try to put it in any gear, its just feels like the clutch isnt opening to let me put it in gear. im thinking it could either be the clutch cable or clutch needs to be adjusted.. and hopefully not the whole clutch that needs to be replaced. any tips/ideas on what i can do to see which one it probably is? and if the clutch needs to be replaced which should i go with? King cobra clutch?

the 1-2 blocker ring friction material may be worn out, if that's the case, tranny needs to come out and apart

1) does it have a stock cable/quadrant ?
2) have you tried adjusting it no matter what it has ? pull up on the pedal to and push it in.. do that 2-3 times and see what happens
3) if it's not internals... sure sounds like a cable adjustment to me , 1 of the 2

the stock quad is made of plastic and some of the teeth break off.. so there is always too much slack in the pedal. it should start to engage about 1 - 1 1/2" off the floor
