Default 306 Purchaseeeeee

I'm looking to buy a 306 shortblock. The guy wants 1200, I told him I'd go 850. He agreed to it. It comes with either an F-303 cam or X-303. It also comes with, double roller timing chain, timing cover, water pump, head studs (I believe...can't remember), forged pistons, and forged rods, oil pan, oil pump, etc.... I'm waiting to hear back from him for more information. I'm just curious as to how good of a deal this would be, if at all. I'm almost positive it only has a small amount of run time. I want to get it and use the heads off of my engine, along with my intake and carb. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.

850 IS NOT BAD FOR a rebuilt short block , to do all that yourself it'd cost twice that much

It's tough to say whether it's a good deal or not. It depends on the parts used in the rebuild. Was the machine work and assembly done by a competent shop?. What's the general condition of the motor (did it have good compression and oil pressure?, is the deck flat?, was it ever overheated)?. If you have no way of knowing other than the guy's word, it's a gamble. If it is in good shape, it would be worth it. I would ask why he was selling it?. I'm not trying to be a pessimist, just be cautious and ask as a lot of questions.

agreed 850 is a steal considering forged pistons and rods alone can put you over that, as mentioned above ask questions! if he hesitates to answer anything then walk away from it. good luck

Thanks guys. Yea, I'm always worried. I'm a firm believer in the saying, "There's no such thing as a good deal." I'll question the **** out of him. I can't get a hold of him right now. But when I do, I'll be sure to ask him those questions FLcracker9.

$850 isn't bad if the short block has decent machine and was built the right way.
BTW, the machine work on my block cost me $700 last month but I can get carried away once in a while.
And, that don't include the balancing either...........

the guy just recently got back to me through email. here's what he said...

i bought this from my brother in law who was the one that had it built at a machine shop. I am getting rid of this motor because i decided to build a 347 in a new boss 302 block, I want to eventually make around 800hp, this motor is only good for around 500hp. the 306 has never been ran, but it will have good oil pressure. it has all new bearings and oil pump and everything machined to spec. all new pistions and rings so it will have good compression once the motor is broken in and the rings seat. I have no way of knowing if the motor was overheated, it wouldnt matter anyway the block was magnafluxed to check for cracks and all new freezeplugs have been installed.

so everything is sounding pretty good. i asked him if he has receipts for the work. just waiting on a reply.

bump bump bump
