Constant Electrical Drain......Help!!!!
got a 89 LX 5.0 with a continual drain. didn't start her for about a week cause i was out of town for work and sure enough the battery was dead as a door-nail. Once I got it jumped I am getting 13 volts so the charging system is working fine. I'm guessing I've got a short somewhere that's hot all the time. It stays charged enough to start up fine as long as I run it every couple of days. I;m checking all the usual suspects like the hood light, trunk light and battery cables. But, electrical is far from my strong point so I was wondering if anyone had chased on of these buggers before and had any hints that might help me to keep some of the hair in my head..LOL! I just bought this car about a month ago and it had a new battery and a new alternator so I'm wondering if the prior owner was chasing the same problem and just was chucking parts at it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Disconnect pos bat cable hook dvom between bat and cable read voltage drain. Pull fuse from box until drain goes away. Check that circuit. Remember to close door between readings or will have dome light being volt drain. Still have drain and all fuse are out. Take fusible link that goes to alt off starter relay. Drain goes away you have bad diode in alternator. You can substitute 12v test light for dvom but for the price can get one at Sears fot $15
this is what i used, it turned out to be my cigarette lighter
