heres the link to the ad: http://stlouis.craigslist.org/boa/1289614094.html
Im looking to buy an sn95 5.0. Being 17, im a little low on funds so I found this car the guhy only wants 2000 for and if the problem is fixable or common ill buy the car. I called the dude and he said that is runs and drives good but it will just shut down completly cometimes. no power at all. no headlights nothing. Anyone heard of this?

If the motor just shuts down my guess would be on either the TFI module or the Hall-effects sensor in the distributor. But since, everything turns off I am not sure. Maybe there is a loose connection with the battery. It wouldn't hurt to go look at the car in person.

So would you say it is most likely something fixable? say under a $500 fix? I need to go look and get more details, im sure its hard to diagnose with such little information. I just wanted to see if it was common with these cars.

It's hard to say.If your problem is like what 86 5.0 said, then it shouldn't be bad. But if it is the dizzy or TFI module, then it may get bit pricey. A new TFI module from Autozone is $50. A remanufactured dizzy is about $150. if you do get the car, it would be best to give the car a full tune-up. You will need a new fuel filter($9 Walmart), cap n' rotor($25), plugs and wires($50), oil change($25), and clean the MAF and throw in some fuel system cleaner when you fill the car up.

First, ask him to tell you exactly what is wrong. Do not let him BS you around. If he does, I'd keep looking for a Mustang. Ask him to tell you specific symptoms of the problem; like when does it occur(intermittently, all the time, when the car is warm, etc.)? This will help us get a better idea of the problem. Also ask him if the car has any more specific problems, major or small. For example, If the A/C doesn't work he better let you know.If he really wants to sell the car, he should be more than happy to answer the questions. if he is hesitant he may be hiding stuff that you probably don't want to get into. Ask him to send you more pictures of the exterior, interior and engine.

Called the guy: 5 speed 126,xxx miles He says that sometimes you can drive the car for a long time and it will shut off and sometimes he drives it for a short time and it shuts off. He also said that he was driving the car as i was talking to him so i guess that is a good sign. Im definatly going to check the car out this weekend if it isnt sold yet.

Personally, it sounds like a bad TFI module or Hall Effects Sensor in the dizzy. Luckily, if you do buy it, you can remove the TFI module and have it tested for free. But like I said, make sure you give the car a good tuneup. It will run like newish. If you drive it, be sure to keep the radio down and listen for any unusual noises. Check to make sure the temp gauge does not get too hot. Make sure the shifter does not grind or is hard to get into gear(the stock shifter is notchy though). Listen for any exhaust leaks. And check to see if the car runs strong. These cars really are not that fast. Since the car has been repainted, I'd ask the owner if it has been in any wrecks. I am just trying to make sure you don't get screwed over.

Would those two things cause the whole car to shut down, like headlights, radio, and everything? Youve been a great help, i appreciate it and it sounds like you know your stuff. I assumed it had been repainted also since that doesnt look like a factory paintjob, but i wasnt sure. I dont like it at all but if i get the car for cheap i can eventually get it done how i want it.
