I see a lot of cars with mods. How do I shop for a car that has mods? What do I check? Here is an example:
The car has 120,000 miles on the body but the engine and tranny have about 40,000.
Here are some of the mods that have been done to it.
-Ford racing headers
-65 mm throttle body
-high flow cats with 2 chamber flowmaster mufflers
-B&M short throw shifter
-BBK cold air induction
-3.73 gears (Ford racing)
-subframe connectors
-strut tower brace
-ford racing control arms
- New black mustang seats and carpet
- Monster tach with shift light
- Pressure gauges
- Pioneer head unit
-Pioneer speakers
I also have a set of gt 40 heads and a cobra intake that are included with the car but just have not been installed yet.

Seems like a lot of mods. Compression test? What would you check?

dammit! Just missed out on a 88 with 102K, 1 owner, super clean, totally stock. I was going to go buy it tomorrow but someone stopped in and bought it tonight. The good thing was it was $4250... super good price!

I would check fluids for usual stuff. does the oil look milkey, does oil look freshly changed (If so I would test drive and then check again), is tranny fluid burnt/low, is the brake fuild black.
Check the compression and look at the spark plugs while you are taking them out. If you are really serious you can check the wheel bearings and ball joints.
If all the above is good then I would feel safe thinking the PO had kept the car in good condition.
Also if you can check the presets on the radio. If they tell you their grandmother drove the thing everyday and the stations of rap/hard rock then you can question them fairly easily....
