Default Gt40 Heads & Intake Upgrade?

Hey guys as most of you know my 5,0 is pretty much stock. As you can see in my sig.

Im going to the wreckers with my dad on thursday and iv read a bit about people getting gt40 heads and intake manifolds off ford explorers to gain more horse power out our 5.0s

Iv got a few questions! here they go

1) Does it matter what year the heads and intake comes off? or what size engine?
2) How do i know if the heads and intake are any good? like if they are worth buying or not?
3) How much should these cost me? used from a car wreckers?
4) If i upgrade my stock heads and intake with gt40's will i need to change anything? like Rockers, springs or any of that Mumbo Jumbo? Lol!

Thanks guys! hope you can help me out here! i just dont wanna over pay for something broken and f'd up that will cost me more in the end!

check the stickies.. most of the ones on the explorers are gt40p (all newer ones, only the first year or year and a half are real 40's)

they will have a "p" right on them, and also have 4 hash marks on the front of the heads

'93, '94 cobra, '95 lightning etc are real gt40, they say "gt" and they have 3 hash marks

the stock valvetrain is ok, 1.7 rockers would be better...... and definitely port the heads a little or your looking at a very minimal gain

port the exhaust, remove the bump, clean up the turns on the intakes, and a comp valve job

personally i would not bother w/ "p" stuff

real 40's cost about $300-$400 , a cobra intake is about $250, explorer intake is about $175, p heads go for like $200 and have smaller valves and funny plug holes

most likely if it's on a explorer/mountanier after 97.5 it'll be the p heads

if you haven't bought headers yet and aren't going to do any port work, I would get them.

any head is better than stock e7's except e6's are even worse

gt40's are decent heads and will give you quite a bit of benefit over stock, but they should be machined before they get put on. most often times you'll be lookin at 500 bucks minimum before you can slap them on a feel good about it.

IMO if you wanna stay cheap, get some windsor sr heads that are assembled and cast for like 800 bucks or soemthing. or really save up and buy alluminum.

in my case i got my 66 289 heads for 75 bucks and had all the maching done for less than 500 bucks. they are all ported out, bowls works, runners worked, exhaust and intake ported and matched. this will yield quite a benefit over stock plus higher compression. if you cant do it for less than 500 i'd save your money and buy aftermarket cast or alluminum. cheaper aftermarket heads would be: RHS and windsor sr. heads.
