pulling the axles is probably the easiest part of the entire process. and they dont have to come all the way out, just gotta clear the diff.

Man alive...

Azz end of car is up.
Drive shaft is out.
Yoke is disassembled.
Pinion Nut(or whatever you call it where the seal is at the front of the housing)is off.
Diff cover removed.

I did not know I was going to pull the axle shafts, but I guess I'll get on that. Whatever else you guys can add right now will be appreciated!

How did you not expect to have to pull the axles at least partway out to get the carrier out? The axles slide into it...

Are you doing the gear swap yourself?

If I can I will. If I can't, it's probably not going to happen.

I'm already replacin' the fuel tank, which is off, and the pinion bearings are shot and the seal was leaking. 2.73 is in there now. I want 3.55 or 3.73, but I have a 3.27 set here already so I was going to put that in while I have all this **** apart. But it's not quite ALL the way apart...

So far this mission is not complete.

If you've never done it before, I recommend having someone doing it. Properly setting up a ring and pinion is not something you can just wing, you have to set preload, backlash, etc...

I hear ya. It's a little intimidating... especially after you say that because I do not know how to do those things. But guess what- the stuff that's in there now is toast.

Ima pull that thing apart in about 10 minutes. Here's what I got on axle shaft: http://static.summitracing.com/globa...s-m-1126-a.pdf

I am not being an azz but seriously, if you are asking that question you shouldn't be doing the gear swap on your own........

Yeah that is a dumb question... I'm feelin' it.

But I learned a whole bunch about that system tonight, which is great. The "swap" will be done but that ring gear isn't comin' off of there tonight and I'm goin' to bed.

I do regret that I couldn't buy the lower gears for this... there's just too much other crap gettin' in the way of me getting things that I want!

Unless you install your gears the proper way, which I seriously don't think you will do. Your going to end back in the position you are at now with the bearings/other internal parts ruined. They may last a couple thousand miles before major issues besides noise start presenting themselves. Noise will be immediate.

Your going to need an impact to get the ring gear bolts off.
