if it's your "baby" why would that thought of ever crossed your mind???...either way half the box sits under a ledge of the firewall , so ther is no easy way from the inside short of removing/ pulling back dash and pulling box out

so this morning i was on my way to work and flipped the heater on, smoke started coming out of the vents and made the windshield foggy with film. turned the heater off till i could get to work and pressure test the cooling system. sure enough it was my heater core. its a pin hole leak cuz it took about 3 minutes for it to lose half a pound of pressure. anyway, on to my question...got any tips or trick to help replace it? i know i have to remove the center console, radio, glove compartment, gauges, drop the steering column, heater hoses in the engine compartment, move the dash out, and a poop load of screws here and there. i had an idea that i might be able to cut a hole in the heater box and remove the core that way, without removing the dash and just cut an aluminum plate to fit, drill some holes for screws, and seal it with rtv. think that would work?
