machine costing/rebuilding an engine
what all is exactly is needed to freshen up a bottom end? i got to looking at a local machine shops price list and it looks like it would be close to 1000 in just machining cost.
i know you need to bore the cylinder walls, new bearings, hone what else am i missing?

Well being a machinist myself it takes a lot of time a brain power to do the job right. 1000 doesn't seem to high to me. When I did my block It took me roughly 45mins per whole and that wasn't crosshatching at all, that was just being in the machine. See what they charge an hour. And try to make friends with a machinist it pays off in the end. lol

Yeah, machine work is expensive. They can give you a brake down on the prices. They really liked me. Not only did I have them do everything from boring to checking for cracks, to line bore to.. all the other stuff that they can do, I also bought my rods, pistons, rod and main bearings, cam bearings, freeze plugs, head work, and had them balance the rotating assembly. I know bottom end is SOLID
EDIT:We built it though.
