Default Transmission choice

alright, its finally come down to trans choices for my ride.

let me know what you guys think.

1. T56 (already have, will need to be upgraded for the new engines torque rating)
weight ~130lbs

2. TKO600 .82 OD
have heard some nasty things about them not liking to shift at high (over 6K rpms) revs. if anyone has one let me know what you think.
weight ~100lbs

3. stock T5 built with Astro Performance internals .79 OD (A5)
able to handle 600lbft/650hp. very low angle helical gears (while be noisy, but i REALLY like that sound ).
weight ~75lbs AND bolts right in; i just need a new clutch disc.

right now im leaning towards the A5 trans, purely based on the weight savings (351W IS heavier after all), and the strength, higher rpm capabilities. if i had the money id look into a T56 Magnum, but i dont have $4K JUST for a trans swap.

anyways, let me know guys.

I'd stick with t-5 probably... save money and time not having to convert to a different trans type.

That being said, I'm going to a 6 speed in the near future... but my tremec t-5 has a whole 2000 miles on it.

The stock T56 isn't rated for a whole lot of torque. If you drive it real easy, it will survive. For a while. But what's the fun of driving easy? Use the TKO 600. It's heavier, but it will last about forever.

I've never had a problem shifting my TKO600 at 6,500rpm. Above that it starts to get really notchy since it uses a bronze blocker ring setup(like the old Toploaders). You can order TKO's from places like Promotion Powertrain that are designed for higher rpm shifting. But if you have an engine that you're actually shifting above 6,500rpm, then the power band it has may match the gear ratios and diff gear you run in a T56 better and a T56 is setup for smoother shifting(multi carbon cone clutches).

T56 = NOT liking to be shifted fast into 4th gear. 1st 3 gears are sex (2.97, 2.07, 1.43). my rpms never drop below like 5500rpms when i shifted at 6500. 1st to 2nd is godly...

TKO = still notchy probably. still heavy. but durable as hell.

A5 = lightweight, durable, bolt in ready.

only downside to the A5 is i have to rebuild it.

currently researching how hard it is to do a T5 rebuild. anyone with info or a link is GREATLY appreciated

my biggest question is... why are you so willing to rape your overdrive?

I personally feel that the trans choice is dependent on how you are planning on driving the car, and where you drive it

fair question.

i live 2.5 miles from where i work.

i realize that its going to cost too much money to make my car do EVERYTHING that i want, so right now its more of a street racer/open track day car, so the closer 5th is for high speed straights or pesky LS powered cars that wont disappear right away.

i dont really care about gas mileage, i have no reason to drive the car further than ~30 miles. maybe 50 to go visit some friends in CT once a month but thats it.

i have a truck and a trailer now to take it over that JIC anything goes kaboom.

another thing, i just love the feeling of still pulling in 5th gear, not having it be a black hole.

i got spoiled with the .80 5th in my T56...

but thats the reason for the close ratio's adder

the father in law is running the tko 600 behind hes 351w based 427 stroker making 583 at the flywheel. At first the trans was tight but hes really liking it after around 2k miles of normal driving. But the only prpblem is it dont like to be shifted over around 6500 rpms going into 3rd. But let the rpms drop just a milli sec and in goes right in.

If you just want to buy a trans once look into everything your going to use it for and calculate what the pros and cons are, thier all going to have one. Then judge the price diffrence and make your decisions.
